Alla fine dell'Ottocento la città di Venezia non era certo assediata da masse di turisti provenienti da ogni dove ma, forte della sua importanza commerciale e già contraddistinta da un'architettura unica nel suo genere, già all'epoca era la meta di tanti visitatori nonché dei primi fotografi di professione: alla fine del XIX secolo l'azienda americana Detroit Publishing Company, che deteneva l'esclusiva nell'uso della tecnica della fotocromia, stampò a colori una serie di cartoline che mostrano tutta la bellezza di una delle città oggi patrimonio dell'umanità.
